First Book provides access to new books for children in need, said the website.

School districts with a minimum of one Title I school may be eligible for participation, Jim Marrinan, director of political action for the Wappingers Congress of Teachers union, told the Poughkeepsie Journal.

Title I is a federal program for schools with a certain percentage of students from low-income families.

The Wappingers Congress of Teachers Local Action Project led the effort, a yearlong process involving getting signatures from teachers, those retired and people in the community, said the Poughkeepsie Journal.

Books will also go into the community, such as to day care centers, Marrinan told the Poughkeepsie Journal.
