The crash occurred around 7 a.m. when a 1999 Subaru Legacy driven by Steven Destefano, 35, of New Windsor, was traveling eastbound on Route 199 when he crossed over the center line and struck a westbound 2015 Nissan Versa driven by Andrew Pierce, 48, of Pine Plains, Capt. John Watterson said.

Destefano was ejected and airlifted to Albany Medical Center with serious, but not believed to be life-threatening, injuries, he said.

Pierce was transported by ambulance to MidHudson Regional Hosptial with minor injuries.

Both drivers were the only occupants of their vehicles and evidence shows that Pierce was wearing a seatbelt, while Destefano was not, Watterson added.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Milan Fire Department and Northern Dutchess Paramedics.

The roadway was closed for more than four hours as the sheriff's office reconstructed the scene, said Milan Fire Department Second Assistant Chief Jeffrey Galm.

The Red Hook Fire Department established the landing zone at the Milan Town Hall for the medevac, Galm added.

The investigation into the accident is continuing by members of the Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Unit.
