Man Seeking Job At Wappinger Club Threatens Employee With Knife, Police Say

WAPPINGER, N.Y. -- A man looking for a job at a Wappinger nightclub pulled a knife on an employee after being told he would be put on a “wait list,” state police said Tuesday.

State police from the Wappinger barracks have charged a 54-year-old Poughkeepsie man with weapons possession and menacing after an incident at a Wappinger nightclub early Sunday.

Andre P. McHugh, a 54-year-old Poughkeepsie resident, is facing several charges including possession of a weapon and menacing, police said.

Troopers said they were dispatched to Smiles on Route 376 early Sunday morning to investigate a disturbance.

Employees of the club, who were trying to escort McHugh out of the building, called 911 when he threatened one of them with a switchblade knife, police said.

McHugh was arrested without further incident, police said.

Police charged McHugh with: third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a Class D felony; first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, a Class E felony; driving while intoxicated, a Class E felony, and second-degree menacing, a Class A misdemeanor.

According to police, the felony DWI charge was brought because McHugh had a previous DWI conviction.

Police also said that he was driving without a court ordered interlock device and while his state driving privileges had been revoked.

McHugh was arraigned in the Town of Wappinger Court and sent to Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $30,000 cash bail or $60,000 bond.

He is due to appear in the court at a later date and time.
