A 19-year-old high school student in Westchester was taken into custody by federal immigration authorities Thursday according to a statement from the Village of Ossining.

Diego Puma Macancela, who attends Ossining High School, was supposed to be attending his prom Thursday.

Immigration authorities spent two days in the village without notifying police, according to a statement from village officials. A final order of deportation was issued by an immigration judge, village officials said. Diego Puma Macancela had been permitted to remain in the United States for several years while his case was reviewed, village officials said.

"Village of Ossining local law enforcement and elected officials continue to strive for improved communication with Ossining's immigrant community," Mayor Victoria Gearity said. "Ensuring that residents feel safe in our community, and will report crimes and seek assistance from the local police department, is essential for keeping everyone in Ossining safe."

A petition has been launched in Diego Puma Macancela's name, attracting more than 615 signatures.
