Samuel Whitted, 78, Poughkeepsie Resident

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Poughkeepsie resident Samuel "Sammy" Whitted died Sunday, May 1. He was 78. 

Whitted moved to Poughkeepsie as a teenager and worked as an independent contractor for construction, demolition and landscaping. 

He married Geraldine (Nicholas) Whitted, who predeceased him in 2001. 

Whitted is survived by his children, Robert Thomas and his wife Tonya, Samuel Thomas and his wife Carmella, and Tina Fryar and her husband Jonathan, all of Poughkeepsie; an “honorary son/nephew," Anthony; his grandchildren, Kent Dukim, Tasha, Kisha, Lee, Shawn, and Shawell; 13 great-grandchildren; his siblings, Perry and his wife Earlene, Clarence and his wife Annette, and Peggy-Ann Whitted, Robert, Roy, Bobby C., Delphine, Rowena Whitted, Hesbia Mclean, Hildred Holmes, Myrtle and her husband James Peterson, and Ruth Bunn. 

Whitted was also predeceased by five brothers; a daughter-in-law Gail (Peaster) Thomas; and his parents, Matthew (Mack) and Lorene (Avery) Whitted. 

Arrangements have been entrusted to Joseph J. Darrow Sr. Funeral Home Inc., 39 S. Hamilton St., Poughkeepsie. 

Visitation will be held at Beth-El Church of God in Christ, 91 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, on Tuesday, May 10, from 10 a.m.-noon. Pastor Dwight Hunt will officiate the funeral service at noon.
