POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Louise R. Viani of Poughkeepsie, a former assistant to the city’s superintendent of schools, died on Friday, March 10. She was 89.

Viani was the daughter of the late George Viani and Geni Bertolozzi.

She worked as an administrative assistant to the schools chief for more than 50 years. She retired in 1999.

Viani was also president of the Poughkeepsie City School District Clerical Association and a former member of the Victory Lodge of the Italian Center.

She had many interests including gardening, traveling abroad, and cooking for her family,

She also was an avid reader, going through a book a day, her family said.

Viani is survived by two brothers, Alfonso and Joseph; two sisters-in-law, Dolores and Lynn; a sister, Ann Gorges; and a brother-in-law, Sam Scardaci.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m.Thursday, March 16 at the William G. Miller & Son Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 17, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 97 Mill St., Poughkeepsie.

Burial will be in the family plot in St. Peter's Cemetery, 171 Salt Point Turnpike
