A Navy veteran of World War II, Hannigan graduated from Cornell University in 1950 and went on to own and operate a successful veterinary practice in Wappingers Falls for 35 years. He was active in politics, serving as a Dutchess County legislator from 1972 to 1980. He was minority leader for four years and chairman for two. While in the legislature, he was instrumental in the development of Bowdoin Park, as well as working to put bike paths throughout the county.

Hannigan was appointed trustee by then-Gov. Mario Cuomo and eventually became vice-chairman of the board of trustees of Dutchess Community College. He had prominent positions with the advisory board of Marine Midland Bank of Southeast New York, the board of Grinnell Library and the Lions Club, and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and former volunteer fireman in New Hackensack. Hannigan had also been a literacy and a hospice volunteer, and he enjoyed hiking, hunting, fishing, scuba diving -- and the New York Yankees.

He is survived by his children, R. John Hannigan of Wappingers Falls, Michael Hannigan of Nome, Alaska, and Jacqueline Hannigan of Middleton, Massachusetts; siblings Marilyn Shortell of New Jersey, Eileen Schwartz of Arizona, Patricia Molloy of Poughkeepsie, Paul Hannigan of Pennsylvania; grandchildren Heather Rose Dominic, Arlo Hannigan, Jessica Zimmerman and Sean Hannigan; great-grandchildren Jack Zimmerman and Ally Rose Zimmerman; and several nieces and nephews.

Hannigan was predeceased by his wife, Helene Hannigan; sons Jack Hannigan and Timothy Hannigan; parents John Patrick and Harriet Katzenstein Hannigan; and brothers-in-law George Shortell and Joseph Molloy.

Visiting hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30, at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main St., in Wappingers Falls. A memorial service will follow at 6 p.m.
