The accident, which occurred around 2:38 p.m., involved a steel beam crashing into the cab of a Komatsu excavator at the facility on Merritt Boulevard, state police said. The operator of the excavator, James Parisella, age 58, of Fort Pierce, Florida, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to state police.

Members of the fire department, police department, and state police responded to the scene, which was the demolition site of the past structure fire.

The operator worked for Environmental Remediation Services Inc (ESRI) out of Syracuse, state police said. They were subcontracted by Clayco Contractors of Chicago, who have the contract for the demolition and rebuild. The company has been working at the Gap site since Nov. 16.
