Dutchess County Offers Free Drowning Prevention Seminars

DUTCHESS COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Dutchess County Department of Behavioral & Community Health continues to offer free drowning prevention seminars for lifeguards and residents to raise their awareness of what a swimmer in the process of drowning looks like.

Dutchess County will offer lifeguards and residents safe swimming and rescue training throughout the county in June.

“Our drowning prevention seminars provide valuable information to help people quickly identify swimmer distress and respond,” said Commissioner Dr. Henry M. Kurban. “Attendees will gain knowledge on what to look for when someone is drowning. Drowning often occurs silently and may be misinterpreted as someone who is playing in the water. A distressed swimmer often cannot call out for help, because the body is concentrating on trying to breathe.”

All participants who complete the program will be awarded a certificate of attendance. Upcoming seminars include:

  • Wednesday, June 1, 7 p.m. -- Hagan Elementary School, 42 Hagan Drive, Poughkeepsie.
  • Wednesday, June 8, 6 p.m. -- Spratt Park, 121 Wilbur Blvd., Poughkeepsie.
  • Thursday, June 16, 6 p.m. -- Faith Assembly of God, Poughkeepsie.
  • Friday, June 17, 3 p.m. -- Beekman Recreation Park, Recreation Road, Hopewell Junction.
  • Tuesday, June 21, 9:30 a.m. -- Camp Hillcroft, 1562 Route 55, LaGrange.
  • Tuesday, June 21, 6 p.m. -- Town of Union Vale, 8 Tymor Park Road, Lagrangeville.
  • Wednesday, June 22, 9:15 a.m. -- Camp Ramapo, 101 Anchorage Trail Road, Rhinebeck.

The presentation will offer guidance for supervising swimmers, how to identify swimmers in distress, an informative video on drowning victim recognition and a time to discuss lifeguard duties and responsibilities.

Seating for the seminars is limited. Reservations are accepted up to two days beforehand by calling 845-486-3404 or by email to HealthInfo@DutchessNY.gov
