Marquez was presented with the 2017 Hometown Hero Award by The Exchange Club on March 16 in recognition of his rescue of a man from a burning building last summer.

On  July 11, Marquez was the first to arrive at an apartment fire on Diddell Road in Wappinger. Police informed Marquez that a man was still inside an attic apartment, but the smoke and heat pushed them back when they tried to search.

Marquez entered the building and climbed the stairs to the attic. He searched for the man in the living room, kitchen and closet before finding him unconscious in the bathroom. He picked up the man and carried him downstairs, where he was taken to a local hospital.

“It’s an amazing story of heroism and service," Exchange Club President Denise VanBuren said. “Our Club was pleased to recognize this outstanding community servant’s heroism with the inaugural presentation of this award. Thank you, Chief Marquez, for your devotion to serving others."
