Utilizing crime statistics from the FBI for cities and towns, NewYorkStateUpstate.com determined that Poughkeepsie, Newburgh and Monticello have 10 of the highest murder rates in upstate New York.

To determine the list, the organization ranked “the 18 cities and towns with at least two murders using a standard of number of murders committed per 100,000 people based on the most current FBI data (in) 2016. The total number of murders includes non-negligent manslaughter.”

The list breaks down murder per 100,000 people, total number of murders and violent crimes per municipality and population.

Monticello topped the list, with 31 murders per 100,000 people, despite the FBI reporting just two murders and 30 violent crimes with a population of 6,438. Newburgh was two spots behind, with a total of six murders and 403 violent crimes amid a population of 28,171, good for 21 murders per 100,000 people. Poughkeepsie rounded out the top 10 in ninth, with 10 murders per 100,000 people, following three reported murders and 234 crimes from a population of 30,062.
