Beacon has been waiting patiently for its new artisan doughnut shop to open, and Thursday was the day.
Glazed Over Specialty Donuts, owned and operated by longtime Beacon residents Ron and Lisa Tompkins, brings a little slice of doughnut heaven to the neighborhood. And judging by the standing room only crowds that packed the place the first two days, not a second too soon.
The Tompkins are longtime Beacon residents. Ron, a Superintendent at Indian Point, also coaches the Beacon varsity wrestling team, and will help Lisa at Glazed Over whenever he's able.
The couple got the idea for the shop after seeing similar places while on vacation. "We had seen something similar, and we liked it, the kids liked it, and there were long lines," Ron Tompkins told Daily Voice. "Lisa was ready for a change... the timing was right."
So far the store is a hit.
No wonder. Customers fill out an individual order sheet choosing from a variety of glazes (think caramel, chocolate, maple, Nutella and many more), toppings (like almonds, bacon, chocolate chips, and more) and drizzles (including caramel, white chocolate, strawberry, rasberry etc.) - and the doughnuts are then made fresh to order while you wait. A viewing window allows kids (of all ages) to watch the doughnuts being made.
"People can come in and create their own doughnuts," Tompkins said. "It's been extremely busy - with no advertising - so far. We wanted to do a soft opening to get used to it - but we're getting used to it real fast."
Maple Bacon Glazed is the shop's No.1 seller so far, but the possibilities seem endless. Glazed Over will also be selling ice cream in the immediate future and will be making made-to-order sundaes.
The store was only open for four hours on Thursday, and Tompkins said there were still lines outside the door when he had to close.
"It's something different," Tompkins said. "We'll see how it lasts. But so far so good. It's fun - we did all the work in here - it took four to five months... we wanted to make a comfortable setting where kids could watch the doughnuts being made."
"They are really good - like an old fashioned doughnut," Rob Featherstone, of Beacon, said. "They're fresh and delicious, almost like cake. The icing is fresh and delicious - I'd say A-plus. I think it's awesome to have this in Beacon, and people seem to like it - it's packed in here... everyone loves doughnuts."
Rachel Gifford of Poughkeepsie has had her eye on the shop, waiting for opening day. "It's the only one like this around," she said. "I been waiting for it to open for the longest time, so it's good to be here. It's the only artisan doughnut place around. I think it will be pretty successful."
"We heard a doughnut place was opening, so we've been looking for it," Kim Stegall, of Beacon, said. "I love it - you can't go wrong with doughnuts, and it is absolutely a good addition to Beacon. It smells so good in here"
