- Smith Street Hot Dogs, Poughkeepsie
June and especially July (it's National Hot Dog month, after all) are prime times for enjoying this quintessential American favorite. The only question: Who makes 'em best?
Three "top dogs" are contenders in our DVlicious contest. Read on for a brief profile (all are being highlighted this week), then let your fingers do the clicking.
You can vote multiple times, albeit once per day. Voting ends 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 27.
Carole's, Hyde ParkFrank Talk: It's less about the hot dogs-- though fans love them -- and more about Owner Carole Crusco and the sense of community she's built over the years with her iconic food truck.
In Hyde Park 20 years and counting, Crusco genuinely cares about her customers -- always giving a big wave and hello before tending to an order and conversation-- often posting the experience on Facebook. "My customers are my friends," she said.
Hotdogs are Sabrett only-- 100 percent beef natural casing with "snap."
"I specialize in hot dogs with the best and freshest ingredients," she said. That means chili, sauerkraut, pickled relish, crispy raw onions, creamy melted cheese, and more. Dill pickles and jalapeno peppers are free. Sometimes she even puts out watermelon or pieces of cantaloupe.
Said Crusco: "My motto is 'When you enjoy what you do, you never have to work a day in your life.'"
