Heavy rain, gusty winds and flooding will usher in Mother's Day weekend as a Nor'easter will hit the Hudson Valley.

The rain chance starts in the afternoon Friday, which will be a mostly cloudy day with a high near 60.

There is also a 40 percent chance of rain, mainly after 7 p.m., Friday evening.

Heavy rain will arrive late Saturday morning, with an inch or more likely on a day in which the high temperature will be around 55.

The rain is expected to continue Saturday night into the morning on Mother's Day, which will be mostly cloudy with a high in the low-60s.

The latest rainstorm means the Hudson Valley will likely exceed its normal rainfall for all of May by the middle of the month, according to AccuWeather.com. So far, the area has received about 3 inches of its normal monthly rainfall of 4 inches.

“Flooding from the heavy rain should be limited primarily to urban areas,” AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Ryan Adamson said.

Small streams and low-lying areas could also experience an increase in water levels.

Gusty winds strengthening first along the coast and then across interior areas will render umbrellas useless at times, according to AccuWeather.com. A rain jacket with a hood may be more helpful to stay dry when venturing outdoors.

The winds could be strong enough to cause tree and power line damage and sporadic power outages.

Nor'easters, characterized by winds typically from the Northeast, are normally strongest from fall through early spring, but can happen at any time during the year, including now, in the spring.

It will clear up -- and warm up a bit -- Monday, with mostly sunny conditions and a high around 65.
