The fire, which began around 7 p.m., was contained to the engine area which is full of batteries, Johnson said.
Passengers were evacuated and no one was injured during the event, he said.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within about 15 minutes, but remained for about an hour until MTA officials arrived on the scene, he added.
"The engine area is loaded with batteries that help power the train," Johnson said. "Luckily, the fire was contained to that area."
Metro-North is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
