POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Vijayalakshi Giles, the principal of the Poughkeepsie City School District's alternative school resigned on Wednesday, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal.

According to the school's meeting agenda, the school board plans to accept her resignation from the Poughkeepsie Academic and Career Excellence (PACE) academy during a special meeting Thursday, the Journal reported.

The circumstances surrounding Giles' resignation were not provided in the agenda and remain unclear, said the Poughkeepsie Journal.

The school, which offers an alternative program for grades 7-12, has recently been under pressure from teachers and students, who complain of a chaotic setting and of safety issues, added the Poughkeepsie Journal.

Joseph Mazzetti, is expected to be named acting principal for the rest of the 2016-17 school year, said the Poughkeepsie Journal.
