HYDEP PARK, N.Y. -- With prom season underway, Franklin D. Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park held annual "Mock DWI" event on campus on Friday, June 3.
The purpose of the event is to encourage students to refrain from drinking and driving.
With the senior student body assembled outside, members of the Hyde Park PD, Staatsburg, Roosevelt and West Clinton Fire Departments join with Northern Dutchess Paramedics in arriving on scene to discover a two-car accident with injuries.
The accident is simulated and the victims are portrayed by students.
As the emergency personnel proceed to extricate the victims, two of which are deceased, HPPD Officer Martin Monaco and Staatsburg Fire District Commissioner DeWitt Sagendorph use the PA system to explain to students what is taking place, including the field sobriety test given to a student actor. He fails the test and is taken into custody while the victims are tended to including the loading o one deceased victim into a hearse provided by Sweet's Funeral Home.
"The expressions on the faces of the student body as they see one classmate going to jail and another being loaded into a hearse lets me think that the kids understand the severity of drinking and driving. If this simulation saves one life then the drill is a success," said Todd Bender, Staatsburg Fire District Commissioner. "The countless volunteer firefighters that helped make this drill a success is a testament to their commitment to serving and protecting the community."
