A Poughkeepsie teen appeared in court Monday to answer charges that he beat a woman unconscious in an attempt to steal her backpack, according to the City of Poughkeepsie Police.

Maiaire Booker, 17, was arrested Tuesday, May 23, after officers responded to Poughkeepsie home where Booker had attacked the woman, said Det. Lt. Matt Clark.

According to Clark, Booker and the woman, who know each other, were standing on a porch talking when he attempted to take the backpack. When she resisted, he began punching and hitting her until she lost consciousness.

The woman suffered serious injuries around her eyes and face, Clark said.

She was transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie before being transferred to Westchester Medical Center, police said.

Booker was charged with felony assault, attempted robbery, police said. He is being held at the Dutchess County Jail on $10,000 bail or $20,000 bond.
