WASHINGTON, N. Y. -- A 34-year-old Poughkeepsie man is facing a felony driving while intoxicated charge after New York State Police connected him to a report of a car hitting a tree in Washington, then learned he had a prior DWI conviction, police said.

John J. Plass III is also charged with first-degree leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, a misdemeanor, police said. He was arrested April 1, police said.

He was issued tickets and is due in Town of Washington Court on April 12, police said.

Troopers got a 911 call about a 2015 Chevrolet pick-up truck leaving Millbrook School Road and striking a tree. Police said the truck had left the scene by the time officers arrived, heading toward Bangall Amenia Road.

Troopers followed a trail of debris and engine oil to find damaged truck on the Shunpike, police said. The driver provided a breath sample that showed a .18 percent blood alcohol content, police said.

New York State Police said his prior DWI-related conviction was in 2008.
