Joseph Smith III, 46, was found around 8 p.m. in the sixth-floor stairwell after officers responded to a call of shots fired at 100 Manhattan Ave., said Capt. Frank Farina.
First-responding officers discovered Smith with a gunshot wound to the chest. Greenburgh EMS personnel worked to revive Smith while transporting him to Westchester Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, Farina said.
Greenburgh detectives responded to the scene to conduct a crime scene investigation, he added.
"We are vigorously investigating this crime, and following all leads," Farina said.
An autopsy will be performed by the Westchester County Medical Examiner Friday.
