Charles D'Amico, 58, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Jill Meltzer, 49, after the Dutchess County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the preliminary cause of death as strangulation, said Town of Poughkeepsie Lt. Gary Hulbert.

Meltzer was found after police received a call about 4:50 p.m., August 17, for a welfare check at the Hudson Harbour Apartments on South Road, said Hulbert.

When officers arrived they found D'Amico inside the apartment, as well Meltzer's body, he added.

Police said D'Amico was an acquaintance of the victim.

D’Amico is being held at the Dutchess County Jail without bail.

He’s scheduled to appear in Dutchess County Court on Jan. 8.
