A local man who barricaded himself inside his Carmel home, threatening to hurt himself, was coaxed out by the Carmel Police Department and the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department.

Officers were altered to the situation on Bullet Hole Road in Mahopac around 6:20 p.m. Sunday when they were asked to perform a welfare check on the man who was possibly suicidal, police said.

An officer from the Carmel Police Department responded to a residence and when he attempted to speak with the man, he became highly agitated.

The young man told the officer that he would not go back to the hospital and that he would get a knife and stab whoever tried taking him to the hospital. He then fled to his bedroom where he barricaded himself and threatened to burn the house down and stab any officer who attempted to gain access, officials said.

At that time, additional officers from the Carmel Police Department, as well as deputies from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department, responded to the scene and set up a safety perimeter around the house.

Additionally, the Putnam County Emergency Response Team ( ERT) was activated and responded to the residence, along with the Putnam County Hostage Negotiation Team. the Putnam County ERT and Hostage Negotiation Teams are specialized interdepartmental units consisting of members from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, the Carmel Police Department, and the Kent Police Department.

The ERT members surrounded the residence while the Hostage Negotiation Team attempted to make contact with the man who was alone and still barricaded inside his bedroom.

The team was able to make phone contact with the young man, while the ERT members maintained their position outside the residence. The lead negotiator spoke with the young man for about an hour and was able to convince him to surrender peacefully ERT members who were outside the residence, officials said.

The male was then transported by members of the Carmel Police Department to an area hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. No injuries were reported to civilians or law enforcement members.
