The fire, which began at 5:20 p.m. at 144 Mansion St., started on a back porch on the second floor, filling the second-floor apartments with smoke, according to City of Poughkeepsie Fire Chief Mark Johnson.

Residents were alerted to the fire by smoke detectors.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire completely within 20 minutes, Johnson said.

Although the porch is an area where residents gather to smoke, Johnson said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Mid-Hudson Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross is providing emergency assistance to the families temporarily displaced including food, clothing, shelter and emotional support.

No one was injured during the event.
