PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- It's been a sad time over the past week for the Peekskill Community Volunteer Ambulance Corps (PVAC) who lost two of its members within a week of each other.

Deputy Chief Mitch Williams, 49, died on June 28, and Evan Fytros, 40, died on July 5, both men are PVAC life members.

Fytros, 40, lost his battle with cancer at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. Born on Nov. 8, 1976, at Phelps Hospital, he was a 1994 graduate of Peekskill High School and received an associates degree from Westchester Community College.

He worked as an operations supervisor for Action Carting Environmental at their Stanley Avenue Transfer Station in Brooklyn. On Nov. 4, 2016, Evan married the love of his life, Jessica (Zamlowski) Fytros.

He was predeceased by his parents, Paula (Moustakas) Fytros and Mark Nicholas Fytros.

Fytros is survived by his wife Jessica Fytros; his two brothers; Nicholas Fytros (Joann) of Little Ferry, N.J., and their children, Paula and Christopher Fytros; John Fytros (Melissa) of Albion, and his daughter Emily Fytros and their son Adrian Fytros. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and their families.

Services were held Monday for Fytros.

The Department said on their Facebook page: "It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Life Member Evan Fytros, 7516. Evan fought a courageous battle with cancer. Evan had a big heart, and for the past 26 years, he volunteered with our family. He started in our Youth Corps. and held positions on our board and chairs of committees. He was always willing to help someone in a heartbeat. Evan was a great guy with a great character that anyone would have been lucky to know! He had made a difference in many lives."

A GoFundMe page has been set-up to help the family cover medical expenses and living expenses.

Williams was a volunteer in the ambulance corps for the last 35 years. He started from youth corps and eventually became chief and deputy chief, according to the ambulance corps.

"He always helped anyone he came across and would give you the shirt off of his back if needed," the Peekskill Ambulance Corps said in a posting on its Facebook page. "Mitch will be greatly missed and there will be a hole in our heart and family for some time to come."

People who worked with Williams at the ambulance corps remembered him as a truly great person.

"Mitch was one to always give more than receive," Ralph Bennett said. "He gave more of his life to Peekskill than anyone else. Not just Peekskill but the world has lost a true hero and great person. If any of us would be half the person Mitch was, this world would be a much better place. Will miss you, my friend. Thank you for all the laughs and joy you brought to my life and all you touched."

He worked as a dispatcher for the Peekskill Police Department for the last 12 years.

Williams is survived by his mother, Sandra Williams; his sister Gail (John) Sanchez, along with other extended family members. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.
