Muriel M. Bass, 96, Of Poughkeepsie

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Muriel M. Bass, 96, of the Town of Poughkeepsie, died Nov. 30 at the Lutheran Care Center. She was born Sept. 21, 1919, in Plymouth, England, the daughter of Henry G. & Rosina Symons Avis.

She married Philip J. Bass Sept. 21, 1940, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He predeceased her in 2003.They were professional ballroom dancers and won the waltz competition in the Harvest Moon Ball in New York City.

She was employed as a secretary to Dr. Norman Vincent Peale at Guidepost Inc. in Carmel, retiring in 1982. She lived in New Port Richey, Fla. from 1982 until her return in 2009.

While living at Lutheran Care Center, she was involved with singing in the choir and taking part in many of the activities that were available to her. For many years, she volunteered with Veterans at VMAC Castle Point and in Florida.

Survivors include her son: Robert (Betty) Bass of Poughkeepsie; daughter: Barbara A. (Guy) Virtuoso of Carmel; and daughter-in-law Linda Bass of Wesley Chapel, Fla; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son, Donald W. Bass; brother, Reginald Davis; and sister, Rosina Woolston.

Services will be at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made in her memory to the recreation department or choir at The Lutheran Care Center in Poughkeepsie.
