MILLBROOK, N.Y. – Former colleagues mourned the loss of Dutchess County’s longest serving legislator, Margaret Fettes, last week.

Fettes, a pioneering community activist and Millbrook resident, died Tuesday, June 7. She was 90.

County Executive Marc Molinaro, who worked with Fettes, praised her as “a truly kind-hearted woman who believed in the importance of community service.”

Molinaro ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in Fettes' honor, according to a report by The Poughkeepsie Journal.

Fettes represented the towns of Millbrook, Union Vale and Washington from 1975-81 and from 1989 to 2009.

In 2012, she was given the Outstanding Contribution by a Senior Citizen award.

Assemblywoman Didi Barrett (D-Washington) made the presentation in Albany, marking New York State Senior Citizens Day.

Barrett called Fettes a pillar of the community and praised her tireless work as critical to the county’s well-being.

Fettes said she was fortunate to have been able to serve her community.

According to her obituary, Fettes graduated from Millbrook High School and SUNY Delhi.

She was the widow of Robert Fettes.

Among the many committees Fettes served on while a legislator were human services, legislative judiciary, education, environment, public safety and budget/finance.

She was a lifelong member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Millbrook.

Fettes also was an Avon representative and was involved with the Union Vale Fire Department.

She is survived by her two children; two grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a sister; and a sister-in-law.

Fettes was predeceased by brothers Henry and Wilbur VanTassell.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Allen Funeral Home, 3270 Franklin Ave., Millbrook.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Grace Episcopal Church in Millbrook.

Burial will be in Verbank Cemetery.
