John Vincent Van Voorhis, 73, Of Wappingers Falls

WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. -- John Vincent Van Voorhis, of Wappingers Falls, died on Dec. 13. He was 73.

Born in Wappingers Falls on Jan. 19, 1943, Van Voorhis was the son of the late John “Jack” Van Voorhis and Virginia Hoyt Van Voorhis. On April 14, 1963, he married Gloria Jean Hauver, who survives at home. 

Van Voorhis served in the United States Army and was retired from IBM in Poughkeepsie after over 30 years of employment. He spent the last 20 years dedicating his services to the American Legion, fulfilling many different positions from treasurer to Commander of Post 1302. 

Van Voorhis was a wonderful storyteller who could always make you laugh. He had a story or joke for every situation and was quite the entertainer. He had a wealth of knowledge of just about everything. He enjoyed many sports throughout his life and was instrumental in founding the first Dutchess County Girls softball league. He was a loving and caring person who treasured his family and friends above all. He had a love of nature, gardening, music and reading, even writing short stories and poetry of his own.

In addition to his wife, Van Voorhis is survived by his daughter, Kelly (Bob) Smisko; his son, Vincent (Deanna) Van Voorhis; his grandchildren, Sarah (Timothy) Wolven, Amy (Lyron) Smisko, Molly (Don) Smisko, Vincent Van Voorhis, Colin Van Voorhis, and two great-grandchildren, Autumn and Wyatt; sisters, Lynn (Tom) Polakowski, Karen Plum; brothers, Raymond Van Voorhis, Patrick (Martha) Van Voorhis, Michael Van Voorhis, Robert (Linda) Montague.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home 371 Hooker Ave. Poughkeepsie. Funeral services will be held at the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery Community Mausoleum 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 19. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Legion Post 1302, Overrocker Road, Poughkeepsie, N.Y. 12603.
