POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- John Freeman Barden Jr. died on Sunday, Dec. 20. He was 90.
He was born in Poughkeepsie on Nov. 2, 1925,, to John F. and Gertrude Swasey Barden.
A World War II Navy veteran, Barden retired as a civil engineer for the New York State Office of General Services.
As well as being a youth football coach, Barden served as a deacon, elder, member of the session and Sunday school superintendent for the First Presbyterian Church in Pleasant Valley, N.Y.
Barden was president of the Dutchess County Chapter of the New York State Society of Professional Engineers and chairman of the scholarship committee.He is survived by his wife, Jane; daughter Jane Bain of Lansing, New York; son John Freeman Barden III of Poughkeepsie; son Tyler Barden of Hyde Park; daughter Priscilla Sumislaski of Ringwood, N.J.; grandchildren Paul, Gary, Kyle and Danielle; brother James Barden of Phoenicia, N.Y.; sister-in-law Peggy Miller of Fairfax, Va.; sister-in-law Joan Hill of Alexandria, Va.;
He was predeceased by a brother Victor and a son-in-law, Mark Bain.
Visiting hours will be on Wednesday, Dec. 23, from 7-9 p.m., at the William G. Miller Funeral Home , 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie. A funeral service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Pleasant Valley, New York on Thursday, Dec. 24, at 10 a.m.; burial will be private.
