FISHKILL, N.Y. – George E. Gaine, a Dutchess County resident since 1968 and formerly of Peekskill and Long Island, died Saturday, April 30 at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh. He was 81.
A son of the late Thomas and Mary A. (McCullagh) Gaine, he was born Dec. 14, 1934, on Long Island. He graduated from Smithtown Branch High School in 1952. After school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Hornet during the Korean War.
He was a state trooper for 24 years, last serving with Troop K in Stormville until retiring in 1981. In 1982, he began working as a carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Cold Spring, where he remained for another 16 years.
His hobbies included softball, bowling, cards and watching the New York Yankees and Giants.
On Jan. 12, 1963, he married Dorothy R. Delaney, his wife of 40 years. She predeceased him Dec. 24, 2003.
He is survived by two daughters, Tracey Gaine and Lynne Riccoboni, both of Poughkeepsie; son, Edward Gaine, of Fishkill; grandchildren, Ashley Wagner and her husband, Anthony Verano, Courtney Wagner, Steven Wagner, Emma Gaine and Jackson Gaine; brothers, James Gaine, of Florida, and John Gaine and his wife, Edee, of South Carolina; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Claudette Gaine of Long Island, Joseph Delaney of Peekskill, and Robert and Doreen Delaney of Beacon; and many nieces and nephews and their families.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Marie Gaine; his brother, William Gaine; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Rosemary Gaine, James Delaney and William and Susan Delaney.
Calling hours will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the McHoul Funeral Home, 1089 Main St., Fishkill. A memorial service will begin at 7 p.m. immediately following calling hours.
