Angelo James Verven, 85, Of Poughkeepsie

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Angelo James Verven, a lifelong area resident, died on Thursday, Dec. 10 at home. He was 85.

Verven was born on Nov. 27, 1930 in Poughkeepsie to James and Pitsa Trampas Verven, graduating from Poughkeepsie High School and serving in the Army during the Korean War.

After his service, he graduated from Buffalo State Teacher's College and taught in the Spackenkill Union Free School District for 34 years, retiring in 1992.

Verven was predeceased by his parents, brother Stephen and sister Electra.

He is survived by his wife Georgia (nee Lyons), daughter Nancy Simou and her husband Telly of Pleasant Valley; son Stephen and his wife Amanda of Rhinebeck; five grandchildren, sister Stella Kalemeris of Rio Rancho, N.M.; various in-laws, several nieces, nephews, and extended family members. .

Visiting hours will be on Tuesday (today) from 4 to 8 p.m. at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., located on Route 9 in Hyde Park.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Kimisis Greek Orthodox Church, located at 140 South Grand Avenue in Poughkeepsie.

Interment with military honors will follow in the family plot at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are welcomed to either Kimisis Greek Orthodox Church, 140 South Grand Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603, or The Hospice Foundation, 374 Violet Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
