WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. -- Wappingers Falls residents are apparently satisfied with their police department.
Residents voted 486-294 to keep their police department Tuesday rather than entering into a shared services agreement with the county which could've saved taxpayers more than $700,000 a year.
Last November, Dutchess County Supreme Court blocked an effort by the village to disband its police force and replace it with the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, saying the village did not conduct an environmental review.
The Sheriff's Office was set to take over on Jan. 1.The village said an environmental review was unnecessary since the decision did not impact the physical environment.
