Union Says Officers Injured During Inmate Attack At Downstate Correctional

FISHKILL, N.Y. -- Three correction officers and a sergeant were injured at Downstate Correctional Facility when a 23-year-old inmate attacked one of the officers with a baton, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal.

Keon Keller was apparently refusing to go to recreation on Feb. 26 when he attacked one of the officers, took his baton and struck the officer's hand, according to the Journal, which cited the state Correctional Officers Police Benevolent Association, Inc.

Keller is then accused of striking a second officer who attempted to intervene before punching the first officer in the face, according to the Journal.

Four other officers then joined in to subdue Keller, who was taken to solitary confinement after the incident, according to the Journal.

According to the Journal, several of the officers were bruised and cut and could not return to work. Some sought medical attention outside of the prison.
