Marie Dunn was run over by a Jeep outside ShopRite Plaza supermarket in Carmel where she worked as a cashier.
"She has been progressing faster than thought, but still will have a very long road ahead of her," the family spokesperson told Daily Voice on Tuesday.
Dunn was in the induced coma for about two-and-a-half weeks.
As she was being taken out of the coma, she started kicking her right leg and right arm.
"She would squeeze mine or whoever's hand, so she knew we were there,'' the family spokesperson said. "She would try to talk, but we couldn't hear her," due to her tracheal tube. She has since been taken off a ventilator and can breathe on her own.
Dunn also showed that she could feel pain, according to the family spokesperson: "She would say 'Ow' to a shot here and there."
Starting Dec. 17, she began rehabilitation. Her first day totally awake was Dec. 19.
Her tracheal tube has been capped "so we can hear her talk,'' the family spokesperson said.
Dunn has been having different therapy sessions every day.
"She did not remember too much," the family spokesperson said. "She can not walk yet, but wants to so badly, she tries pulling herself out of bed."
Dunn was struck by a Jeep operated by a 75-year-old woman from Lake Carmel as she walked across ShopRite Plaza on her way to work.
Dunn suffered a broken pelvis and both sides of her skull were broken. She was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center by helicopter in "extremely critical condition," according to Town of Carmel police.
The Jeep's driver told police she did not see Dunn walk in front of her vehicle. No tickets or charges were filed against the driver by police.
