Doctors believe there is little chance Giuliana Weglinski contracted any diseases from the needle prick, but said the area near the child’s home is part of the heroin epidemic currently affecting the Lower Hudson Valley, according to Time Warner Cable News, which reported that police believe the needle may have been tossed into the yard from a passing car.

New York State Police Trooper Melissa McMorris told Time Warner Cable News that parents should teach children to avoid hypodermic needles and other drug paraphernalia that could be hazardous.

The girl’s parents, Brian and Jessica Weglinski, said they wish they had discussed the matter with their children sooner, according to Time Warner Cable News.
