Message From Memorial For Slain Poughkeepsie Student: Stop The Shootings

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Of all the things said at a recent memorial for Poughkeepsie student Caval Haylett Jr., one in particular seemed to sum up what his grieving community is feeling – the shootings have to stop, Time Warner Cable News reported Wednesday.

Haylett, a promising high school senior and varsity basketball player, was gunned down in cold blood as he stood with a group of people on Winnikee Avenue earlier this month, according to multiple media reports.

Police have said they do not believe that the 18-year-old was the intended target.

Moments after Haylett was shot, another teen was wounded as he walked through the intersection of Bement Avenue and Harrison Street.

Poughkeepsie Mayor Rob Rolison has vowed to commit every city resource to finding Haylett’s killer, but, to date, no arrests have been made.

At the student-led service at Poughkeepsie High School, Haylett’s friend and teammate Akili Hill, and local pastor Bishop Debra Gause, both said street violence will never end unless the community itself bands together to stop it, the Time Warner Cable News report said.

Anyone with information about the shootings is asked to call Poughkeepsie police at (845) 451-7577.
