At approximately 4:35 a.m. on Sunday morning, 56-year-old Damita Mathis of Beacon Falls in New Haven County in Connecticut was driving her 2014 Kia Sorento southbound in the northbound lanes of traffic when she struck another driver near the parkway’s Weaver Street exit in Scarsdale.

Mathis and her passenger, 45-year-old West Haven, Conn. resident Uvette Frasier, were critically injured in the crash, according to county police, and hospitalized at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.

Police said that Mathis died from her injuries.

Two other vehicles were involved in the crash, a Land Rover driven by 29-year-old Waterbury, Conn. resident Mahendra Danrajh and a Mercedes driven by Queens native Michayl Velikov. Danrajh was seriously injured and also taken to Westchester Medical Center. Velikov declined medical attention at the scene.

According to county police, an accident investigation team is currently reconstructing the crash to determine the specific sequence of events that led to the incident.

Police noted that “It remains unknown where Mathis entered the parkway going the wrong way and whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.  Toxicology tests on the deceased will be conducted by the Westchester County Medical Examiner’s Office as part of the investigation.”
