The allegations were made by Christina Novak, who served as the nonprofit SPCA’s director of communications from July 2015 to July 2016, according to the Journal.

Claiming the things she witnessed were “a hard thing to stomach,” Novak said the animal shelter often contradicted its no-kill policy, according to the Journal, which reported that she also has accused the organization of suppressing a November 2015 report by outside professionals finding the organization was “operating beyond its capacity for cats” and providing “inadequate” housing for the animals.

Novak, who has also said she has concerns about employee treatment at the SPCA’s Hyde Park facility, has reached out to the state Attorney General’s Office and the state Department of Labor, according to the Journal.
