EPA Approves $12M To Replace Tainted East Fishkill Well Water System

HOPEWELL JUNCTION, N.Y. – The problem was identified more than a decade ago, but only now is the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency taking steps to alleviate the impact of a toxic well water system that has been affecting homes and businesses along Route 82 in East Fishkill, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal.

The EPA is providing $12 million to fund a three-year construction project that will pipe clean water to 325 Route 82 properties that have contaminated well water systems.

The EPA is providing $12 million for a three-year construction project that will eventually pipe clean water to about 325 properties that currently only have access to the contaminated system, according to the Journal, which cited a statement Thursday from U.S. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, D-Cold Spring.

The measure comes 13 years after the property owners first learned of the issue and 11 years after the EPA first listed the area as a Superfund site, according to the Journal.

The EPA had previously estimated the project would cost $27.5 million, according to the Journal, which reported that Maloney views the $12 million in assistance as just the first of a number of federal aid packages.
