Rumors Swirl Around The Future Of Croft Corners Fire Station

All of the rumors and talk about the possible closing of Station 5 in the Arlington Fire District, might be just that if the district and the owners of the building, the Croft Corners Fire Company, can work out a lease agreement.

For years the district has leased the building located near the intersection of Route 9 and Spackenkill Road and is staffed with paid firefighters 24/7 in addition to volunteers when available, said Arlington Fire District Chief Tory Gallante.

For quite some time, the two entities have not been able to come to an agreement over the lease, said Gallante.

As an alternative, the District Fire Commission asked  Gallante to seek out another location in the event the two sides could not come to an agreement, he said.

An advertisement was placed in a newspaper and online, but no deal has been made and a building has not been selected, Gallante said.

"As far as I know the two are still negotiating and a decision has not been made about the future of Station 5," he added.

Station 5, which has been in operation since 1951, currently houses two engines (pumpers) and one ladder truck. Gallante said most calls are handled by the staff that is paid for by taxpayers.

"A lot of this started on social media before the fire commission election," he said. "But, of course, not everything online is true."

The district has not called off a search for a new building, but Gallante said that doesn't mean they aren't still negotiating: "At this point, it depends on if a deal can be reached between the two."
