Popular Poughkeepsie Diner Sold

DUTCHESS COUNTY, N.Y. -- For the past 36 years regulars to the Palace Diner in Poughkeepsie felt right at home greeting the same staff and seeing everyone from a local police officer, roofer or maybe even a politician.

And now that the popular eatery has been sold, the former owner said those same regulars should expect the same servers, and most importantly, the same food.

""Why change something that has worked perfectly for 36 years," said Roseanne Vanikiotis, administrative officer with the Vanikiotis Group.

The restaurant was sold in May after the operating group received an offer from a New Jersey restaurant owner who visited the Palace and liked what he saw.

"Leaving the restaurant was a tough thing," said Vanikiotis. "Really, much of our staff and customers have been with us from the beginning so is was a hard decision to make."

She added that the company -- which also owns the Daily Planet Diner in Lagrangeville, Table Talk Diner in Poughkeepsie, and Red Line Diner in Fishkill, in addition to the Hyde Park Marina and Townsend Plaza in Fishkill -- has no plans to open another restaurant.

"I think we have enough to keep our hands full," she said. "We will be focusing on our other businesses."

In an online message to customers, the group said: "For 36 years we have enjoyed the support of our staff and the community who have made the Palace Diner a wonderful place to be, and we want to thank you all.

We encourage you to continue to support the Palace, and the team there you know and love, under its capable and enthusiastic new owner, Michael Pagonas."
