The Hudson Valley Brewery had what owner John-Anthony Gargiulo figured would be a quiet, 'soft' opening of the tasting room over the past few weekends (HVB is open only on weekends).

Despite the fact that many had no idea where it was - and once you get there it still isn't easy to find, with no markings on the building other than a small sign on the front door - the place was hoppin' Saturday when Daily Voice paid a visit.

Craft brew lovers were lined up to taste samples of the brewery's five beers - Forever Overhead (sour IPA brewed with wheat and hopped with Citra and Simcoe), Incandenza, Make Believe (sour farmhouse ale aged in oak wine barrels, hopped with Citra and Mosaic), Amulet (conditioned on blueberries and hibiscus flowers) and Soliel (a sour farmhouse brew aged in oak with pineapple and marigold flowers).

And everyone was smiling.

"It's going really well, there are definitely more people here than we expected," Gargiulo said Saturday, as he as he filled glasses for customers. "There was a lot of excitement, a lot of people have been waiting. It's good for them and good for us. Word got out, and the place has been packed.

"It's great," he added. "We've put so much work into this project, and it's a kind of huge milestone to overcome. We're all really happy to be here. Give us six months to a year and we'll get better."

Future plans include the addition of a restaurant on the second floor.

Visitors were thrilled.

"My friends came last night, and they said it was the best new spot in Beacon - you've got to come hang out," Terrence Murren of Beacon said. "I think it's delicious. This is perfect for Beacon, and I'm looking forward to what's to come as well."

"I'm trying the sour, and I'm not a beer drinker, but I like it," Monica Clarke of Beacon said. "I can't wait for the upstairs to open, apparently there's going to be a restaurant here. It's a kind of unique spot, and I think it's going to be well received."

"I like it a lot, really good beers... really tasty," Kevin Daly of Wappingers said. "We've been waiting for this place to open for a while, and I like the beer, they did a really good job here."

"It seems pretty cool - a big open space with a nice feel to it," David Swope of Beacon said. "I like what I've tasted. It's a little hard to find, but we like it."

Current hours are Friday (5-10 p.m.) and Saturday and Sunday (2-10 p.m.).

Hudson Valley Brewery is located at 7 E. Main St. in Beacon. Their website can be found here, or check them out on Facebook.
